This ancient temple houses rock cut images of Lord Shiva (father of Lord Ganesh), Lingodhbavar (incarnation of Lord Shiva) and several other shrines. The Sthalapuranam (book carrying the legends, stories, epic and folklore of Gods in a particular temple) of the temple indicates that the inscriptions in the Karpaga Vinayagar Temple were constructed in three stages.
