The holy temple of Ghrishneshwar is one of the most famous tourist destinations near Aurangabad. Also called Ghusmeshwar, the temple was built around 1795 and is just a short distance away from the world famous Ellora Caves. The temple enshields one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country dedicated to Lord Shiva. Ghrishneshwar temple is one of the holiest pilgrimage of Shiv Devotees all over the world. The red volcanic rock temple was built by queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore.
There is a very intriguing parable attached to the origin of this temple. Once there was a woman called Kusum, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. She used to Worship Him everyday. The people of the nearby areas respected her for the same. However, the other wife of Kusum's husband had developed strong hatred for her, given her fame and admiration by other people. One day the iniquitous lady murdered the son of Kusum. This deeply deisheartened the sinless lady but she continued to pray Lord Shiva. Pleased by her devotion Lord Shiva blessed her with the life of her son and appeared in front of her. It is believed that on Kusuma's request, Lord Shiva manifested Himself at the very site, in the form of the Jyotirlinga Ghusmeshwar. The holy temple is flocked with devotees throughout the year. You can also offer prayers at the temple on your visit to Aurangabad. The experience will be so enchanting and riveting that you would love to cherish it forever.
